Gupta Receives 2013 Eckman Award

Vijay Gupta, associate professor of electrical engineering at the University of Notre  Dame, has been named the recipient of the 2013 Donald P. Eckman Award. The Eckman Award is presented annually by the American Automatic Control Council in recognition of outstanding achievements in control theory by a researcher under the age of 35.

Gupta, who was honored for his “contributions to theory of estimation and control of networked, cyberphysical systems,” will receive his award in June at the 2013 American Control in Washington, D.C.

A faculty member since 2008, Gupta’s research focuses on the analysis and design of cyberphysical systems. These systems are widely considered to be the next generation of engineering systems with applications spanning diverse areas such as structural health monitoring, medical devices, smart power grids and intelligent transportation systems. Developing a systematic design theory for such systems includes, but is not limited to, the synthesis of solutions from disciplines such as control, networking, processor scheduling, materials and software design. Gupta is leading a range of theoretical and applied funded research initiatives in this direction.

In addition this award, Gupta received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2009. He was also a recipient of the 2010 Ruth and Joel Spira Award for Excellence in Teaching through the University.

Prior to joining Notre Dame, Gupta served as a research associate for the Institute for Systems Research at the University of Maryland, a consultant for the United Technology Research Center and a research scientist for the Center for Applied Research in Electronics at the Indian Institute of Technology. He earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology and master’s and doctoral degrees, also in electrical engineering, from the California Institute of Technology.
