Jena Receives 2014 MBE Young Investigator Award
Debdeep Jena, professor of electrical engineering at the University of Notre Dame, has been selected as the 2014 Young Investigator by the International Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) Advisory Committee. He is being recognized for “using MBE to unravel new electronic and photonic phenomena in polar semiconductor heterostructures, and for sustained leadership in the demonstration of their device applications.”
Presented at the 18th International Conference on MBE in September, the MBE Young Investigator Award acknowledges significant technical achievements in MBE and MBE-related topics made by an individual working in academia, government, or industry who has made these contributions before age 35 but remains younger than 40 during the year of the award.
A faculty member since 2003, Jena’s research focuses on the growth and properties of III-V semiconductor heterostructures and their application in high-speed electronic devices and optoelectronic devices. He also investigates and develops nanostructured semiconducting materials such as graphene, 2D crystal semiconductors, and nanowires for device applications. This experimental work is driven by theoretical underpinning of charge, heat and spin transport in nanomaterials.
Jena is the author on several journal publications, including articles in Science, Nature Journals, Physical Review Letters, Electron Device Letters, and Applied Physics Letters.
In 2012 he received the International Symposium for Compound Semiconductors Young Scientist Award and an IBM Faculty Award. He received the Edmund P. Joyce Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 2010 and the National Science Foundation’s CAREER award in 2007.
Jena earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, with a minor in physics, from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur in 1998 and his doctorate in electrical and computer engineering from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2003.
