Ph.D. Candidate Jessica H. Schiltz - "Additive Manufacturing of Orthopedic Ceramics"
Hundreds of thousands of patients annually elect for a total hip replacement (THR), a surgical operation meant to treat the severe progression of osteoarthrosis of one or both hip joints. Recent projections forecast a steady rise in THR as the result of increasing prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (Brigati et al., 2018; Kurtz et al., 2009). As THR demographics diversify with respect to age, body mass, and physical activity, heightened demands are being placed on device manufacturers to offer THR materials that are optimized for long-term survivorship.
