Student Experience

Here there is information about planning a trip in Europe.

Traveling in Europe

Many students choose to travel around Europe during the weekends. The 3 day weekend breaks are the perfect amount of time to go enjoy another city. While not all the students plans these trips, as there is plenty to see in city during the 5 weeks, living in London provides a great opportunity to explore more of Europe. Visit the Notre Dame International website for more information about preparing for travel.

Here are some of the countries and cities students on the Summer Engineering Programs have visited

Getting There

Many students choose to fly to the further European cities, but if they are going somewhere in Great Britain many choose to take a train.  Here is a link for many different train companies.  London has 5 international airports: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, and City.  Some of them are over an hour train ride from central London.  The bargain airlines in Europe are Easy Jet (flown out of Stansted, Gatwick, and Luton) and Ryan Air (only flown out of Stansted).

Heathrow is accessible by the Tube.  It is over an hour ride to Waterloo Station.  It is also a 30 minute cab ride with no traffic, and much longer with traffic.

Standsted has a direct train which takes 47 minutes (stanstedexpress.com) or a direct bus which takes 80 minutes.  There is no Tube station.

Gatwick has a direct train which takes 30 minutes or a direct bus which takes 90 minutes.  There is no Tube station.

The most common accommodations for students are hostels and hotels.  Hostels are lower end hotels with less amenities.  Students can usually get private rooms if they are traveling with enough people or can choose to get a single spot in a larger room. Many good hotel deals can be found, making them an affordable option, but still a bit more expensive.  hostelworld.com and booking.com are good places to start looking.
