Graduate Student Awards
GSU Outstanding Teaching Award
This award is for eligible graduate students who taught at the University during the calendar year.
†he annual Outstanding Graduate Student TA or Instructor Award, instituted in 1999, recognizes graduate student instructors and TAs who demonstrate excellence in the classroom or teaching laboratory. This award is for exceptional teachers/TAs and is separate from the Graduate Student Union’s teaching awards.
A department may nominate up to 5% of its total number of unique individual graduate student teachers/TAs for the 2015-16 school year. Graduate students who served in multiple semesters count as one unique individual. The cap of 5% need not be filled every year. Nominees should have taught or played an instructional role in the 2015 calendar year or the 2015-2016 academic year. Since a graduate student teacher/TA can have more than one role in the classroom, we will accept more than one nomination for the same student during his or her tenure at Notre Dame.
(Nominations for Commencement 2017 awards are welcomed through March 5, 2017).
Description of the Award
The Shaheen Awards recognize one outstanding graduate student from each of the four divisions of the Graduate School: Humanities, Social Sciences, Science, and Engineering. Students selected will receive a $2,500 cash award and a commemorative plaque.
For a list of past winners, see our past winners page.
The Shaheen Awards recognize excellence as a graduate student in any one or a number of areas: grades, research and publications, fellowships or other awards, teaching, and mentoring. Postgraduate positions offered/accepted can be noted as evidence of a nominee’s talents and abilities. Only doctoral students are eligible for the Shaheen Awards.
Eligible students are those who graduated in August 2016, January 2017, and those in good standing who will graduate in May 2017.
Award winners must be able to attend the Graduate School Awards Dinner on Friday, May 19, 2017, when the awards will be presented, and the Graduate School Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 20, 2017.
