Steven Prendergast is one of the five students named 2012 Tau Beta Pi laureates. The engineering honor society uses the annual program to recognize gifted engineering students who have excelled in areas beyond their technical majors. This class of laureates joins 79 other remarkable students who have been so honored since 1982, including 2011 Notre Dame chemical engineering graduate Rosary Abot, who is now pursuing her graduate degree

Prendergast, who received his bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering in May from the University, was selected for his contributions as a volunteer, researcher, and leader. An Eagle Scout and James L. Holloway Jr. Award winner, he has served in numerous leadership positions through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps at Notre Dame, as resident assistant in the residence halls on campus, and as a Core Band and section leader with the University of Notre Dame Marching Band.

His research activities while at the University have focused on the nanoscale chemistry of uranium and its applications to the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel in the Energy Frontier Research Center at Notre Dame.

In addition to his activities through the Notre Dame section of Tau Beta Pi, Prendergast has volunteered in the Salvation Army Band-Link program as an afterschool mentor, teaching underprivileged students in South Bend to read and play music. He has also served in the Trident Naval Society, helping to host fundraisers for various charities like the Wounded Warrior Project.

Prendergast and the remaining 2012 laureates will be honored along with other national award winners at the 107th Tau Beta Pi Association Convention in September in Lexington, Ky. Each laureate will receive a $2,500 cash award as well as a recognition plaque.

According to Patrick J. Flynn, professor of computer science and engineering and chief adviser of the Tau Beta Pi, Indiana Gamma Chapter, “Steven’s record of scholastic and extracurricular accomplishment made him eminently qualified for this rare distinction, and the 2011-12 officers and advisers of the Tau Beta Pi student chapter are to be commended for their diligent preparation and enthusiastic support of his nomination.”
