Snider Named 2018 IEEE Fellow

Gregory Snider has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The grade of Fellow is the highest distinction conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon an individual member. It is bestowed in recognition of outstanding accomplishments in fields related to the IEEE. Fewer than 0.1 percent of the organization’s voting members are selected annually for this honor.

Recognized by the IEEE “for contributions to single-electron based computing technology,” Snider’s interests encompass the design, fabrication and measurement of micro and nanoelectronic devices. In the micro regime, he focuses on experiments regarding fundamental limits on energy dissipation in computing, and on the interface between CMOS and nano devices. On the nano side, Snider works on single-electron devices, including Quantum-dot Cellular Automata [a computational paradigm that offers ultra-low power dissipation and scalability down to molecular dimensions] and single-electron transistors.

A faculty member since 1994, Snider joined the University of Notre Dame after working in industry and obtaining his Ph.D. at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He currently serves as a professor within the Department of Electrical Engineering and has served as director of graduate studies for the department. He is also a faculty affiliate in the Center for Nano Science and Technology and the Notre Dame Nanofabrication Facility.

Snider has authored or co-authored more than 110 journal publications, over 160 conference presentations and is the co-holder of a patent for micro-fabricated electron multipliers.

In addition, he is a member of the American Physical Society, the American Society of Engineering Education and the IEEE Electron Devices Society.

With more than 423,000 members in over 160 countries, the IEEE is the world’s leading professional association for the advancement of technology for humanity, encompassing aerospace systems to computers and telecommunications, as well as biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics. The association publishes close to one third of the world’s technical literature in electrical engineering, computer science and electronics, which includes approximately 200 transactions, journals and magazines.
