Media, Tech & Society:
Is a Sneaky Serpent in Your Newsfeed?

We’ve all heard about fake news, and likely experienced its ubiquitousness on social media. Even Pope Francis recently weighed in on the issue, likening fake news to the “sneaky serpent” in the Garden of Eden. The role of media and communication — from the relationship between the White House and newsrooms, to your daily newsfeed and its impact on your friends and family —is rapidly changing, and the impact is profound.

Join a panel of experts who will discuss a variety of topics, including real-world examples of the quickly changing media environment; the science behind fake news; and media literacy in an age of social media and misinformation.

PANELISTS:
Caitlin Conant, ‘08
Political director, CBS News

Katherine Corcoran, '81
Hewlett Fellow for Public Policy, Kellogg Institute for International Studies; former Associated Press bureau chief

Carlos Lozada, ‘93
Associate editor and nonfiction book critic, Washington Post; Notre Dame Gallivan Journalism program faculty

Tim Weninger
Assistant professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, College of Engineering; expert in media disinformation
