Notre Dame First-Year Engineering Leaders Named to National Roles in ASEE Division

Andrew Bartolini and Joseph Lyon

Andrew Bartolini and Joseph Lyon, leaders of the University of Notre Dame’s First-Year Engineering Program, have been selected for two officer roles of the First-Year Programs Division of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE).

Bartolini, the director of the First-Year Engineering Program, will serve as the division’s program chair in the 2025-26 academic year and as the division chair in the 2026-27 academic year. Lyon, the coordinator of the First-Year Engineering Program, begins his two-year term as awards chair in 2025-26.

These appointments reflect Notre Dame’s engagement in the conversation about first-year engineering education at the national level. The First-Year Programs Division of ASEE provides a national forum for the exchange of ideas among those involved in the early years of a student’s education in engineering and promotes scholarly work focused on first-year students.

As program chair for the 2026 ASEE Annual Conference, Bartolini will lead the First-Year Programs Division’s efforts in organizing technical sessions and managing the submission and review process for conference publications. He will also coordinate the division’s full conference schedule, including panels and workshops. Kerry Meyers, associate dean for student development and director of Women in Engineering, previously served in this role in 2018.

Lyon, who joined the faculty in 2024 after earning a Ph.D. in engineering education from Purdue, will oversee the division’s recognition efforts—including best paper and presentation awards, as well as ASEE Fellow nominations—in his role as awards chair.

“Joe and I are both grateful for the chance to serve in these roles,” said Bartolini, who earned his bachelor’s and doctorate in civil engineering from Notre Dame. “We’re excited to be part of the national conversation on first-year engineering education and bring fresh ideas back to our students.”
