Program Description
In this 6-week, 6-credit program, you’ll study and live at Polytechnic University of Valencia in the hilltop university town of Alcoy, Spain. You’ll take day trips to Valencia, Bocairent, and Xativa; enjoy a 3-day weekend in Granada; and spend the final day of the program in Madrid.
The 2027 program will be led by Professor Brett Savoie.
This summer experience is open to all engineering students.
Courses
All students enroll in both of the following courses for a total of 6 engineering credits.
EG 34440: Probability and Statistics
Instructor: Professor Elena Perez
EG 34440: Probability and Statistics introduces rising second-year engineering students to fundamental concepts in probability and statistics through practical applications, examples, and coding. Students will develop quantitative and analytical skills while using Python through Google Colab to apply statistical concepts and explore how probability and statistics can be used to understand data and solve engineering problems.
The course also places probability and statistics within a unique historical context, tracing the development of mathematical and statistical thinking from ancient times through the present day. While in Rome, students will explore connections to the Roman Republic and Empire, including early calculation methods such as the abacus and historical ideas surrounding chance and uncertainty. By combining modern computational tools with the history of quantitative thinking, students will gain both practical statistical skills and a broader understanding of how these concepts have evolved over time.
AME 34351: Machine Learning for Engineers
Instructor: Professor Brett Savoie
AME 34351: Machine Learning for Engineers provides a hands-on, project-driven introduction to using machine learning to solve engineering problems. Students will learn how to transform real-world engineering questions into data-driven prediction and decision-making tasks while building practical skills in Python. No prior machine learning experience is required, making the course an accessible introduction to how engineers can use data and computational tools to address complex problems.
Through projects and real-world datasets, students will explore techniques including regression, decision trees, random forests, clustering, dimensionality reduction, and uncertainty quantification. Students will use Python and industry-standard tools such as NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, and scikit-learn to clean and explore data, build and compare machine learning models, evaluate their performance, and communicate results. The course emphasizes practical application, giving students experience with machine learning tools and approaches that can be applied across engineering disciplines.

Housing
Savoy Hostel is an iconic hostel located in Alcoy, specifically in the city’s old quarter. It is very close to Universitat Politècnica de València where classes will take place.
Program Fee
The cost for the 2027 Summer Study Abroad Program is $9,800, plus a $200 University Study Abroad Administration Fee.
The program fee includes the cost of 6 Notre Dame engineering credits; accommodations for six weeks; meals in the dining hall on program days during the week and weekend; roundtrip transportation from Madrid to Alcoy; GeoBlue international health insurance; all program academic outings and field trips; and on-site program support from Notre Dame faculty.
It does not include the cost of airfare; passport/visa fees; international cell phone/plan; or personal spending money.
All students are considered for need-based engineering scholarships to help underwrite program costs.
