Areas of Interest

Prof. Kurama’s research interests include the behavior and design of concrete buildings under earthquake loading, precast/prestressed concrete, structures under fire effects, and reinforced concrete materials for increased construction efficiency and sustainability. He is a registered engineer in Indiana and Michigan.

He is a co-recipient of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Charles C. Zollman Award (2015 and 2018); American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) State-of-the-Art of Civil Engineering Award (2012); ASCE T.Y. Lin Award in (2003); and PCI Martin P. Korn Award (2002).

He is also a recipient of the PCI Distinguished Educator Award (2014); University of Notre Dame Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C. Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching (2013 and 2008); PCI Central Region University Professor of the Year Award (2012); and PCI Young Educator Achievement Award (2005). He was selected as a Faculty Fellow of Notre Dame’s Kaneb Center for Teaching and Learning (2010).

Prof. Kurama received a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation in 1999.
