Technology has given mankind so many things … from clean drinking water to refrigeration, space travel, and more. Engineers and scientists around the globe have helped to overcome challenges and created opportunities that improve the quality of life for us all.

Yet as advanced as life on Earth has become, there is so much more that can be done to improve it. These are the Grand Challenges we continue to address as engineers — to make a difference in the world through sustainability, health, security, and the joy of living.

The National Academy of Engineering’s Grand Challenges Scholars Program coordinates with engineering education programs, like the program within the College of Engineering at the University of Notre Dame, to help prepare the next generation of engineers to become technological leaders who will face and overcome some of the most pressing issues facing society.
