Engineering in Photos highlights the people, accomplishments, and experiences that shaped the College throughout May 2026. This month’s collection captures the excitement of Electrical Engineering Senior Design, the pride of Commencement Weekend, the camaraderie of the Staff Appreciation Lunch, and the community spirit of the Sunburst Races. These moments showcase the innovation, dedication, and connections that make Notre Dame Engineering a vibrant community.
Electrical Engineering Senior Design
Electrical Engineering Senior Design is a two-semester sequence in which students apply concepts from across the curriculum to a hands-on engineering challenge. This year, students designed, built, programmed, and demonstrated autonomous Micromouse robots capable of learning and navigating a maze without human guidance. Inspired by the IEEE Micromouse competition, which began in the late 1970s, the project combined robotics, sensing, embedded systems, and control algorithms as teams worked to improve their robots’ speed, accuracy, and problem-solving abilities.
Commencement Weekend
This May, the College of Engineering celebrated Commencement Weekend alongside the University community. From group photos with classmates and faculty to the ceremony in Notre Dame Stadium, the images capture the pride, accomplishment, and shared experiences of Notre Dame engineers. The weekend also featured remarks from University valedictorian Martin Soros ’26, a civil and environmental engineering and earth sciences graduate, and Mary Cunningham Boyce, provost emerita and professor of mechanical engineering at Columbia University, who delivered the Graduate School Commencement Address and received an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree. Together, the celebrations marked a memorable close to the academic year and honored the achievements of the graduating class.

Staff Appreciation Lunch
Staff members from across the College of Engineering came together for the annual Staff Appreciation Lunch, enjoying good food, conversation, and time with colleagues. The gathering recognized the invaluable contributions of staff members and celebrated the many ways they strengthen and support the Notre Dame Engineering community.
Cushing Hall Reflection
After a spring rain, a puddle outside Cushing Hall of Engineering created a striking reflection of the historic building and surrounding landscape. The image captured a quiet campus moment and a different perspective on a familiar home for generations of Notre Dame engineers.
Sunburst Race
College of Engineering staff members, family, and friends participated in the annual Sunburst Races, a community event that raises funds for Beacon Children’s Hospital. Organized by the College’s Staff Engagement & Culture Committee, the team brought together participants across a variety of events, including the 10K, 5K, and 5K Fitness Walk. The event provided an opportunity to promote wellness, strengthen connections among colleagues, and support an important cause in the Michiana community.
