Every month, our college photographer is out and about capturing the energy, creativity, and everyday moments across Notre Dame Engineering. This photo collection highlights just some of what they saw in May 2025—from senior design projects and research presentations to student awards, commencement celebrations, faculty development, and community events. It’s not everything that happened, but it offers a glimpse into a few of the moments that made the month memorable.
EE Senior Design Demos

Electrical Engineering Senior Design is a two semester sequence in which students work in teams to propose, design, build, and test a functional prototype of a product. Prototypes included: a functional myoelectric prosthesis; an autonomous glider that separates from a main aircraft mid-flight; a novel CubeSat that simplifies attitude control (orientation) by using magnetorquers; a portable laser tag system; sensor-based optical communication device; an autonomous lawn mower; an EE-themed pinball machine; a WiFi-enabled digital camera; and a robot that uses ChatGPT to have interactive conversations with the user.
Annual College-wide Student Awards

Celebrating undergraduate excellence, Notre Dame Engineering proudly recognizes the 2025 recipients of its annual college-wide student awards. Pictured are this year’s honorees of the Reverend Thomas A. Steiner, C.S.C. Award (top photo), the Americo Darin Engineering Prize (bottom left), and the Edward and Jane Prein Family Award (bottom right), recognized for their outstanding achievements.
ASCE, FYE TA & SWE Professional Headshots

Each May, our College of Engineering photographer takes professional headshots of students from various engineering organizations. This session featured students from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), First-Year Engineering TAs, and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).
Future Faculty Workshop

The College of Engineering and the College of Science hosted their joint Future Faculty Workshop in early May. Promising external graduate students and postdocs were invited to campus to experience Notre Dame, get to know our faculty, and share some of their latest research. These invitees then joined local ND graduate students and postdocs in five faculty-led panel sessions aimed at explaining all aspects of the academic search process and helping with discernment about pursuing an academic career.
Spring 2025 Staff Excellence Awards

We celebrated the outstanding contributions of our Spring 2025 Staff Excellence Award winners this semester! Each honoree went above and beyond to positively impact their departments, the College of Engineering, and the broader University of Notre Dame community. Congratulations to R’nld Rumbach (AME), Frank Severa (CEEES), John Slaughter (ESC), and Barbara Walsh (EE). Your dedication and excellence inspire us all.
COS-JAM

Each May, engineering students participate in the College of Science Joint Annual Meeting (COS-JAM). Through poster sessions, presentations, and awards, the event highlights the achievements of undergraduate research.
Engineering students Cindy Huang (junior AME) and Emma Speyrer (senior AME) received Best Poster Presentation Awards at COS-JAM.
Commencement Weekend

This May, the College of Engineering conferred 557 degrees—446 undergraduate degrees and 111 graduate degrees—during Notre Dame’s Commencement Weekend. From group photos with classmates and faculty to the ceremony in Notre Dame Stadium, the images reflect the strong sense of community and accomplishment shared by Notre Dame Engineers.
Congratulations graduates!

Kevin Bowyer Named Highly Ranked Scholar by ScholarGPS.

Kevin Bowyer, Schubmehl-Prein Family Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Notre Dame, has been named an inaugural Highly Ranked Scholar by ScholarGPS.
Sunburst Race

The Sunburst Race is a local event that raises funds for Beacon Children’s Hospital. The College of Engineering’s Staff Engagement & Culture Committee looks for ways to encourage staff to build community with one another and with the broader Michiana area. For the past two years, the committee has organized a corporate team for the race, inviting staff to participate alongside family and friends. Team members took part in a range of events, from the half marathon and 10K run to the 5K run and family-friendly 5K Fitness Walk. (Photos/College of Engineering staff participants)
